Knowledge of my mothers familial history (or lack there of) and why things seem to be the way they are, has slowly unraveled over the years.

Understanding exactly what took place and how it was all so intentionally constructed to realising I am present in and perpetuating that construction, trapped within its walls.

On my fathers side, direct descendants of Christian missionaries in China, I realised that I sit within the uncomfortable position of being complicit in several brutally imperial but morally righteous institutions. This discomfort was pushed further as I erased the faces of my grandmother and her direct family.

All of the images in the first section come from the National Archives UK and the Barbados National Archives depicting life in Barbados by photographers commissioned to present an image of a harmonious regime of control and subjugation.
